The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) is fortunate to have some of the world’s most successful
export-focused companies as members. Recently, the OCC interviewed Akram Hamid, President and
CEO of Dallata Consulting Group Ltd., about what it takes to succeed in today’s global environment.
OCC: Dallata Consulting has won three Ontario Business Achievement Awards. What is the secret to
your success?
Dallata: We are successful thanks to our staff and the innovative atmosphere within the company.
We take the roads less travelled. While everyone was going to China, we focused on smaller
markets that offer endless opportunities. For example, we are the only Canadian company in Libya
last March after the revolution. We ended up with major long-term contracts and won awards for
our work there.
OCC: Dallata works with clients in over 27 countries on six continents, including Africa, Asia, and the
The Middle East. What are the factors that influence your decision about where to locate next?
Dallata: We are always working to understand the potential of other regions. We keep a close eye
on factors affecting the business climate. Pakistan is a perfect example. It has one of the largest
mining deposits in the world, a huge young population and new investment rules that make the
country an extremely hot spot for business over the next two to three years. It is an ideal place for
us.
OCC: If there is one thing that you could tell companies with global aspirations to avoid, what would
it be?
Dallata: Companies need to avoid copying what they do here in the international marketplace. You
have to adjust your business model to fit the region you are entering.
OCC: Is there any other advice you have for Ontario companies who want to take advantage of
overseas business opportunities?
Dallata: Yes. Look away from the U.S. and China. The world is a really big place, and there are plenty
of opportunities to find, especially in countries that are less frequent trading partners. Dallata is
here to assist and we hope that businesses will contact us for advice about trading.
